UN Secretary-General visits Ukraine, promotes diplomatic measures to reduce tensions

The United Nation secretary general Antonio Guterres announced that he arrived in the Ukrainian capital Kiev on April 27 after holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Sharing on Twitter, Mr. Guterres affirmed that the United Nations would continue to work to expand humanitarian assistance and ensure evacuate civilians from the areas conflict in Ukraine.

The UN chief stressed that the sooner this conflict ends, the better for the United Nations, Russia and the world.

It is expected that on April 28, Secretary General Guterres will have a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and then hold talks with the President of the host country Zelensky.

Before going to Ukraine, United Nations Secretary-General Guterres had talks with Russian President Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow. At the meetings, Guterres called on Moscow and Kiev to work together to establish aid corridors and evacuate civilians in Ukraine.

Secretary-General Guterres announced his readiness to mobilize all United Nations resources to assist and evacuate thousands of people stranded in the city of Mariupol.

According to Xinhua News Agency, on April 27, a United Nations spokesman said that during his meeting with Secretary-General Guterres, President Putin agreed in principle that the United Nations and the Committee of the Cross International Red (ICRC) participated in the evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal plant in the city of Mariupol.

Further discussions between representatives of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the Russian Ministry of Defense will take place.

The United Nations Secretary-General’s visit to Russia and Ukraine at this time is expected to be a positive factor for the negotiation process between the two sides.
