Willing to work overtime but not office hours

Shark Viet is one of the “sharks” that receive the most love in the Shark Tank Vietnam program. Besides the billion-dollar deals, Shark “grandfather” is also the owner of many immortal sayings with high “damage”.

Recently, an old statement of Shark Viet has been dug up by the people, but it is accompanied by more or less controversy.

Specifically, at the event “Forum of cooperation between businesses and schools” organized by Foreign Trade University in 2019, Shark Viet pointed out a series of disadvantages of Vietnamese workers such as: Always grumbling when the boss assigning work, the boss said it was not finished, he argued, he used to eat less during the work, lack of initiative in work…

“Many Vietnamese employees who go to work just want to come back at exactly 5pm. That’s why they often ask for leave, their grandfather’s death anniversary is also off, and then their grandmother’s birthday is also off. That’s not professional. can’t do anything. When you are a link in the system, what you do will have a great impact on the collective.” Shark Viet commented.

Shark Viet’s shares quickly attracted the attention of the online community. Many people agree with Shark’s view that many workers are still quite passive, the end of working hours is considered to be the end of the job. Others think that Shark’s statement is a bit imposing, because the current generation of young people has clearly changed in both thought and way of working.

At the seminar “Cultural diversity and equality in the modern working environment” just held in Ho Chi Minh City at the beginning of April, a statistic was released that, by 2025, generation Z (also so-called Gen Z – people born between 1996-2012) is expected to make up 30% of the workforce in Vietnam.

Mr. Charles-Henri Besseyre des Horts – Lecturer in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior at HEC Paris School of Management, and Lecturer in the MBA Program of CFVG once said: Generation Z – the generation of young people with can be considered a “disaster” for companies with a long history of development. Because of their strict recruitment apparatus and process, it will be difficult to capture the special things of this generation.

The young people born in 95 and 96 who are about to graduate from school are the first generation of Generation Z. This is an “unprecedented” human resource in the history of the recruitment industry, a “full Internet” generation. If Generation Y – those born in the period 1980 – 1994 are people of the transitional Internet generation, only discovering the Internet when they start to grow up, then the new generation Z is born with the Internet. So Gen Z will be a very unique generation, pushing HR executives from one surprise to another when this generation demands a completely different treatment from Generation Y.

The great advantages of Gen Z’s way of working

This generation’s workforce is embodying new workplace qualities and expectations. Because, they are inherently flexible, desire to assert themselves, prove their ability in the workplace, are not bound to social stereotypes…So what are the different advantages of Z warriors compared to those of Z warriors? previous generation?

Gen Z grew up in an era of explosive technology.

Gen Z likes to break the rules, break all the limits

Generation Z is known to be a flexible generation, emphasizing individuality, respecting differences and diversity in the collective. Along with the step-by-step openness of society, Generation Z of different genders always likes to assert themselves and demonstrate competence in the workplace with their own personal imprints, not bound by any which template.

Therefore, never expect them to obey the leader without knowing right or wrong, they are ready to take risks to defend their point of view and are ready to fight in any situation.

Gen Z doesn’t mind working overtime but not office hours

Generation Z is more suited to businesses than government agencies. They find it difficult to work within office hours or any fixed limit in both space and time. However, he is very willing to work overtime to think of ideas, take on big projects that require creativity and high challenges, willing to move his work environment hundreds of miles away from home. … In other words, the potential of Generation Z is promoted more in a free environment instead of 8 hours of administration.

Gen Z is ready to “jump” to learn and find opportunities

For many people, “job hopping” can be scary, but for “gen Z” it is not. They seem to have mastered technology and are making rapid strides when it comes to job hunting and preparing themselves to be excellent candidates.

Gen Z has wide connectivity, flexibility in work without following any stereotype

Even Gen Z tends to switch jobs after about a year or a few years. After a period of apprenticeship, training, participating in projects and when the time is right, they will “give up” to look for new opportunities or set up their own companies.

Generation Z has a multidimensional view

Many people think that Gen Z only knows how to “put his face” in the phone, so it can’t do anything against it. However, when it comes to reality, it’s quite the opposite.

Growing up in the boom of the Internet helps Generation Z to have a more multi-dimensional view of everything. They do not have stereotyped thinking like the previous generation, but always compare one problem with another; The way to find out information is not only limited to the country, but they also actively build a network of friends around the world.

In the method of work communication, it also shows that the majority of Gen Z people choose to use social networks such as Facebook, Zalo, Viber, Telegram… or the intranet. They limit face-to-face meetings to save time and be flexible about where they work

With all of the above, it is clear that managers also need a change in leadership art, need a “rejuvenation” vision to adapt to the different personality of Gen Z. Therefore, the new company’s human resources team is growing stronger and creating a breakthrough in the economy.
