Controversy over guidelines for grading exams for excellent students in Literature in Quang Nam

Need guidance for marking the “antithesis” part

Specifically, in addition to the opinions that agree with the interesting and topical exam questions, some comments are interested in the grading guidelines of the exam.

A lecturer in Thua Thien Hue, who twice participated in the provincial exam for excellent students in Literature, said that the person who created the topic according to the current news was very good, bringing out what the society was interested in. The creation of exam questions like this needs to be replicated to help students approach many angles. But the problem when making this form needs to have a team of “firm hands”.

However, the dotted content only points in one direction such as: Understanding parents is a profound expression of filial piety; How to show love and gratitude to parents; Understanding parents is the source of empathy…

“I have read the marking instructions for this topic from the Quang Nam Department of Education and Training. What I’m wondering about here is that the test requires the candidate to present their thoughts, but there is no “antithesis” section in the marking instructions.

That is, candidates can express opinions contrary to the majority but still have a strong argument. If there is a separate point of this “antithesis” in the grading guide, it will ensure objectivity”, the lecturer shared.

“Grading instructions, not answers”

Talking to VietNamNet, Mr. Le Van Hiep, Division of Secondary Education, Department of Education and Training of Quang Nam province confirmed that the posted grading instructions are from the Department.

“First, it should be corrected that this is a grading guide, not an answer, not a barem. The grading guide is only for orientation and it is very open, not like right and wrong answers, “said Mr. Hiep.

According to Mr. Hiep, the grading guide has two parts: general instructions and specific instructions.

“In the general instructions, the first point instructs the examiner to perform the grading instructions flexibly because this is an open question. In the general instructions, it is very clear that the examiner needs to grasp the candidate’s presentation content to evaluate the overall work, avoid counting points for points, and use grading instructions flexibly.

The second point in this general guide is to encourage articles with a way to identify and explain the problem in depth, and argue closely, creatively, and persuasively,” explained Mr. Hiep.

According to Mr. Hiep, thus, the grading guidelines have encouraged articles with different, convincing, and well-argued interpretations. “This respects the candidate’s work on the difference,” added Mr. Hiep.

Mr. Hiep informed, the third part, in the specific instructions, it was written that candidates can do the test in many ways and here are some orientations, not binding.

“In this, the grader will do it flexibly, not do the same as the new grading instructions, so understanding that is wrong. There have been guiding views on respecting students’ views and explanations, which are persuasive. The things in the dot guide are only guidelines, an approach, not binding.

If there are different assignments, the examiner will still respect them if the students explain convincingly, “said Mr. Hiep.

With the question of why not include critical ideas that are convincingly explained by students in the grading instructions, Mr. Le Van Hiep shared: “This is a writing assignment of 9th graders that only took 60 minutes to do. The topic has 2 sentences, divided according to the ratio of points – PV), in the grading instructions already have an implication, not the grading instructions that always separate the problem.

In the process of implementing grading guidelines for judges, the examiners will discuss, comment, supplement, agree, and then come to a score, because students can’t imagine how they do it.

Previously, the social network Facebook spread a question for excellent students in Literature, on April 19 in Quang Nam province about: “Children’s understanding of parents”.

The content of the exam question 1 with 8 points is a social argument with the following content:

a. In the movie “Repply 1988” after his unsophisticated behavior towards his daughter named Duk Sun, the father confided: “I am not just born to be a father, I am also a father for the first time.

b. In the article: If your parents are unfortunate enough to go away, please show them the way, guide, and pull their hands together!, journalist Tran Thu Ha shared: Although she is older, but about motherhood, mother Just the same age as you. The child is confused, the mother is also confused; I’m wrong, mom is wrong. I’m even less disappointed in you than I am in myself.

From the above words, please present your thoughts on the issue: the understanding of children towards their parents.
