Ecuador declares a state of emergency in 3 provinces

In a statement carried by state media, President Lasso said a state of emergency had been declared in the coastal provinces of Guayas, Manabi and Esmeraldas. The above decision will be implemented immediately from the night of April 29 and will be effective for 2 months.

In addition, President Lasso ordered the mobilization of 4,000 police and 5,000 military personnel to the three provinces. A curfew was also in place from 23:00 the night before to 5 a.m. the next morning in some areas, including the town of Duran, near the port of Guayaquil.

Drug trafficking has led to an increase in crime rates in Ecuadorwhich has killed 1,255 people since the beginning of 2022. About 440 crimes have occurred in Duran and Guayaquil – Ecuador’s commercial hub and the capital of Guayas province.
