One of the workers recorded the attack of the ferocious bird while trying to duck low to avoid it. They seemed to be working on the facade of the tallest building in Wisconsin, the Bank of America Center. The bird is a large falcon and is probably guarding the nest. The world’s fastest flying raptor is famous for using skyscrapers instead of cliffs to nest. They mate for life and can use the nest for several years. Therefore, they will do their best to protect the nest against any potential intruders.

In the 1960s, falcons were distributed throughout the United States but gradually disappeared as a result of the widespread use of pesticides such as DDT. The state of Wisconsin banned the use of this hazardous chemical in 1972. The federal government also introduced a similar regulation after a year. But the number of falcons and many other species of birds has plummeted.

In Wisconsin, conservationist and falcon expert Greg Septon is undertaking an important restoration project. He set out to breed a small group of captive falcons to return them to the wild. The Bank of America Center Building became a temporary home for 14 large falcons, living in artificial nests on the roof of the building, in 1987. Over the next five years, 103 falcons were released there. Wisconsin, forming a population healthy enough to reproduce on its own.

The falcons are well-adapted to urban life and seem to like to nest in man-made boxes in the shade of power plants or on the roofs of tall buildings. Since the early 1990s, more than 400 large falcons have hatched in boxes erected by the Wisconsin Community Service (WPS).
