Looking like a sci-fi movie, the robot named Gundam is mounted on a crane truck.
The robot was developed by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) and two other Japanese companies.
According to JR West, the robot can reach the central wiring of a train. It is controlled by humans through virtual reality (VR) glasses and remote control.
The operator can feel the weight of the object the robot is carrying. As a result, they proactively offer flexible handling plans, control the situation and ensure labor safety.
It is estimated that the robot can lift objects weighing up to 40kg with two hands to a height of 10m.
Robots can perform maintenance work on hard-to-reach railway lines, helps reduce the risk of electric shock and falls for employees, and is an additional source of ‘personnel’ for the company in the context that they have to cut one third of their employees.

The tests were conducted from April 2022 and continue to be perfected. The process of operating robots with VR will be simplified to the maximum.
The robot is expected to come into operation in early 2024.
