Chinese broadcaster CCTV said the six-story building that collapsed around noon on April 29 was home to a restaurant, a guesthouse and a movie theater.

Pictures released by local media showed a large cloud of dust rising into the air on a street adjacent to the scene.

So far there have been no reports of casualties although there are reports that many people are trapped in the rubble and “a rescue operation is underway”.

CCTV said “rescue workers rushed to the scene” and “Specific casualties are under investigation”.

Building collapses are not uncommon in China, due to weak safety standards and the corruption of officials involved.

In January this year, an explosion suspected of a gas leak collapsed a building in the city of Chongqing, killing more than a dozen people.
