Russia confirmed that Putin attended the G20 summit, the US sought to deal with it

US President Joe Biden and his advisers are discussing how to approach the G20 summit in Indonesia after Russia informed the host country that President Vladimir Putin planned to attend the event.

The White House leader once stated that Russia should be excluded from the group of 20 major economies (G20) because of the military offensive in Ukraine. Senior officials in his administration Biden has left the recent G20 events in the presence of Russian delegates to express opposition to Moscow.

The US side has also had discussions with Indonesia, which will host the G20 summit in November, about stepping up its condemnation of Russia. However, according to CNN, there is currently no decision to boycott the group leaders’ meeting because there are still 6 months to go before the event takes place.

US officials revealed that it is unlikely that Washington will decide to skip the meeting when they consider the downsides of the move and ceding the forum to Russia and China.

“President Biden has publicly expressed his opposition to his Russian counterpart Putin attend the G20 summit,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on April 29. Psaki noted that it is too early to say what the summit will look like.

The White House understands the fact that the G20 will not be eliminated Russia from the group, as the decision requires consensus and China has made it clear that it does not support such a move. That creates a different scenario than when Russia was expelled from the G8 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

According to Psaki, the White House knew that Indonesia invited Putin to the G20 summit before the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine on February 24. Indonesia also invited Ukraine to attend the meeting as a guest, a move welcomed by the US.

In the new statement, the President of Indonesia emphasized unity among the member countries of the group.

“Indonesia wants to unite the G20. Don’t let division happen in the group. Peace and stability are the keys to the recovery and development of the world economy,” Indonesian President Joko Widodo emphasized in a statement. Cabinet announcement on April 29.
