Scientists are testing what they say is a treatment hypertension (High Blood Pressure) first in the world.

Around a third of adults in the UK have high blood pressure, but many may not know they have it, according to the UK’s Health Security Service (NHS).

Although it often has no noticeable symptoms, if high blood pressure is left untreated, it can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Around 100 patients across the UK are among 630 patients worldwide taking part in the new trial by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and Barts Health NHS Trust (an NHS trust based in London). , Brother).

People diagnosed with high blood pressure often take the drug at a dose of 1 tablet once a day to control blood pressure, the researchers said.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) says that while there is not always an explanation for what causes high blood pressure, most reasons for developing it are due to diet, lifestyle or their medical condition.

This study, funded by Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and supported by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), will take place over three years.

Dr Manish Saxena, Research Lead and Associate Clinical Director at QMUL, said they were “excited” by the trial.

“Although this is only an early stage, our ultimate hope is that the treatment proves to be a safer, more manageable, more realistic solution to the treatment of high blood pressure.

A twice-yearly treatment by subcutaneous injection provides a better alternative to daily dosing. And we believe this will be good news for patients and make hypertension treatment more convenient.”

Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, Medical Director of the BHF, said: “The study will determine whether a single injection twice a year is sufficient to lower blood pressure over a long period of time. If this proves to be the case. If found to be effective, it may provide an alternative to daily medication for some (high blood pressure) patients.”
