47 years of national reunification: Promoting relations between Vietnam and Canada

On the evening of April 29, Friendship Association Canada-Vietnam (CVFS) organized a workshop to celebrate the 47th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and the unification of the country (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2022) in an online form, attracting the participation of many Canadian friends and expatriates.

As the keynote speaker at the seminar, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoi, former Ambassador of Vietnam to Canada, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam – Canada Friendship Association, affirmed important steps forward in all areas of the relationship. Comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and Canada in the past 5 years, with a focus on defense cooperation. Canada’s opening of the Defense Attaché Office in Hanoi is an important milestone in defense cooperation between the two countries, which is currently being promoted in various fields, including: dialogue, consultation, training, maintenance. peace, maritime security, cooperation on multilateral forums…

Vietnam – Canada cooperation in the field of trade has also witnessed impressive progress, with bilateral trade turnover in 2021 exceeding 6 billion USD. However, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoi, Vietnam and Canada still have a lot of potential to boost this number.

Education is also a bright spot in the cooperation relationship between the two countries, when Vietnam is currently ranked first in Southeast Asia and fifth globally in terms of international students in Canada. Canada currently identifies Vietnam as a priority market for educational cooperation.

The participants of the workshop enthusiastically discussed solutions to promote the relationship between Vietnam and Canada, priorities to focus on to bring bilateral cooperation to a new height,….

Speaking at the seminar, Mr. Luis Silva, an expert on government relations, emphasized that over the past half century, Vietnam has grown strongly. If at the time Vietnam and Canada started establishing diplomatic relations in 1973, Vietnam was still in wartime, now Vietnam has entered a period of peace and prosperity. He said that it is entirely possible to expect that by 2045, when celebrating the 100th anniversary of National Day, Vietnam will be in the ranks of high-income countries. Mr. Luis Silva expressed his belief that the Vietnam-Canada relationship will constantly grow and develop in the coming time.

The workshop is considered to be a bridge for Canadian officials and people to better understand Vietnam, in the context that both countries are members of the Francophone Community, participating in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), share history and culture and have close people-to-people exchanges.
