With the desire to help domestic and foreign customers access products bearing the imprint of Vietnamese folklore, Mr. Nguyen Tan Phat crafted a collection of 31 saola mascots from jackfruit wood, on the occasion of the occasion. SEA Game 31 was held in Hanoi. Every day, Mr. Phat often creates artworks with the theme of the year’s zodiac.
The 39-year-old artist often uses natural materials such as jackfruit wood, laterite, and seashells found in his hometown to create various works of art.”Faced with the opportunity of tourism to open and welcome the 31st SEA Games, I would like to convey my love to Vietnam through 31 saola statues, the SEA Games mascot symbol held in my home country. I choose jackfruit wood because it is a very traditional, environmentally friendly and easy to find material in Vietnam“, said Mr. Phat.
To create a saola statue, Mr. Phat must perform the following steps: sketching on paper, sketching on wood, chiseling to create wooden blocks, shaping, coloring and finishing.

Manually chiseled to shape the product.
Phat said that to be able to create this work, it took him about 1 month from the time the idea to the first finished product. “As for when I started holding a saw, holding a chisel, rolling up my sleeves, it took me about a week for the first work. Subsequent works take about a day.”.
That is to say, to complete this collection, Mr. Phat and his associates took about 2 months of hard work.
Final finishing stage.
The coloring step requires great ingenuity, otherwise it will smear the finished product that has been painstakingly shaped.
Each color part after painting will have to wait for it to dry completely before applying the next colors.
“After completing all the formalities, the saola mascot statue will be sold to tourists for about 450,000 – 500,000 VND/picture, the quantity sold is also limited.“, said Mr. Phat.
Currently, this collection is being displayed along with many other works of Mr. Nguyen Tan Phat at the Ly Thai To monument area (on the bank of Hoan Kiem Lake), where the Hanoi Tourism Gift Festival organized by the Department of Tourism takes place. Organized by Hanoi Tourism.
