Dad creates comics from his daughter’s questions
Like many other parents, Duc also has to face many innocent and witty questions from his children, such as Do fish sleep?, How does blood flow?, Why is sea water salty?,…
But instead of letting his children grope for knowledge, Duc took that as inspiration to create a series of comic books called Science Storytelling, with each book’s title being the questions asked by the child.
According to Mr. Hoang Anh Duc, the most important thing to do for “child readers” is to listen and answer children’s questions, especially for children from 3 to 6 years old – the age with many children. desire to discover about life, the world around the most. Answering children’s questions will show care and listening to children, helping parents and children understand each other better through stories without making children lose interest.
He also shared that, in the process of composing the series, he absorbed the ideas of the famous Ehon series in Japan and Chris Ferrie’s Beginner Science series. However, the Ehon series only focuses on family life and love stories, while the Science Beginner series raises big questions for children. Therefore, he has chosen to exploit questions in daily life, with friendly, easy-to-understand content, with a witty style.
However, children’s curiosity, desire to explore and learn is borderless, so many times Mr. Duc feels “secret” to his daughter’s questions. At that time, in order to make the big problems closer to the children, he took the experiences, things and phenomena around in life as a fulcrum to answer the child’s curiosity. Choosing a simple story-telling, starting with situations or associations and then gradually leading into the story, with illustrations with bright, clear colors, the Science Storybook series has help explain scientific phenomena in an easy to understand, gentle way.
However, to satisfy children’s curiosity, the companionship of parents is indispensable. Mr. Duc also said that parents need to spend 10-15 minutes a day before going to bed to read with their children, not only helping to answer their children’s questions, but also bonding family feelings.
Duc said that he will continue to develop the book series to answer the “why” questions of his children, and at the same time expand to more novel topics to popularize knowledge for children from an early age.
