Four male students died while bathing in the river
Binh PhuocInvited each other to the Dong Nai river branch to light a camping fire, the group of 11th graders drowned while taking a bath, noon on May 1.
Nine boys from Bu Dang High School went to Dong Nai river branch (Dong Nai commune, Bu Dang district, Binh Phuoc province) to celebrate. Six of them went down to take a bath and the other three sat on the shore and lit a fire to grill food. While bathing, the group swam to the middle of the river when they were swept away by the fast currents, struggling to call for help.
One lucky child swam to shore and called for help. Many young people camping nearby jumped to save but only one child was rescued. Three hours later, the bodies of the remaining four victims were found by the authorities.
In the past few days, there has been heavy rain in the upstream of the Dong Nai River, so a lot of water has poured in. The area of the group of students affected has beautiful scenery and is a frequent destination for young people on weekends and holidays.
Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for Vietnamese children aged 2-15. More than 2,000 children die from drowning every year in Vietnam – higher than other countries in Southeast Asia, according to a report by the Department of Children (Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs) at the end of 2020.
