Meta founder Zuckerberg wrote in a 2015 Facebook post, revealing that he enjoys reading “stories about how people built great companies.” In another share, the 37-year-old billionaire said he had turned to reading books to learn more about “what creates innovation – about the model, the questions and the context”.
And Mark is not alone. Mark’s favorite books are also the “common denominator” of successful entrepreneurs.
The four entrepreneurs below share the books that have shaped their careers and business strategies.
1. Mark Zuckerberg
In 2015, Zuckerberg read the book “Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration” by Alice Wallace and Edwin Catmull, co-founders of Pixar. The book tells the story of how the animation studio became a giant in creative entertainment.
It seems that Zuckerberg has drawn at least one lesson from the book: “Don’t wait for things to happen to share them with others” with what author Catmull wrote in the book: “Let’s talk about this early and often. It would be nice to have the results, but no one knows about the arduous journey along the way.”
Zuckerberg wrote that he was also impressed by “The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation”, which tells the history of Bell Labs – founded by Alexander Graham Bell, currently owned by Nokia.
2. Daymond John
In 2018, American Shark Tank investor Daymond John revealed a number of books that changed his life. Among them are the titles: “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey and “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter.
However, John and many other Shark Tank investors also recommend the book “Think and Grow Rich.” by Napoleon Hill. 3. Warren Buffett

To develop business acumen, famous entrepreneurs Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have also recommended “Business Adventures”, authored by journalist John Brooks. Brooks has written about memorable events in the history of iconic American companies like Ford and General Electric. Buffett lent the book to Gates in 1991, and in a 2014 blog post, Gates said he still has the book.
4. Emma Grede
Emma Grede is the CEO of Good American Jeans, a founding partner of SKIMS, and the first black woman investor on “Shark Tank” at age 40. Last year, she shared about her story. One of her influential books accompanying her career was “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School: Notes from a Street-smart Executive”. The book was written by Mark McCormack – who is considered the founder of modern sports marketing and his company IMG. Grede says the book has given her the confidence and negotiating skills to strike deals with celebrity clients like Kris Jenner.
Grede also revealed that she “constantly” re-reads Ray Dalio’s “Principles: Life and Work”.
