According to local media, an 8-storey building in Trường Sa city, Hunan province, collapsed on the afternoon of April 29. The mayor of the city confirmed that at least 23 people were trapped in the rubble while 39 people were still missing.

At the time of initial construction in 2012, the building had 6 floors, then expanded to 2 more floors in 2018 and had a structural change. The specific cause of the incident is still under investigation.

China’s State Councilor Wang Yong led a working group to the scene to “direct the rescue and emergency response work”. Chinese Minister of Emergency Management Huang Ming also chaired an online meeting on the morning of April 30, saying that the house collapse in Trường Sa, Hunan had “revealed a series of contradictions and profound problems”. , stressed the need to draw profound lessons from this incident, comprehensively review safety hazards, effectively prevent major risks and limit serious accidents.
