iPhone – A rare bright spot in the smartphone market

Although Apple doesn’t report details on device sales, the latest figures show that iPhone revenue for the first quarter of 2022 was $50.57 billion. This is up from $47.9 billion in the first quarter of 2021.

Canalys analysts said: “Apple has seen increased user demand for the iPhone 13″ with the new iPhone SE, resulting in solid 8% growth and 56.5 million units shipped.”

Strategy Analytics estimates: “Apple shipped 57 million iPhones worldwide, accounting for 18% of the global market share in the first quarter of 2022.”

“Apple had a successful quarter, a key contributor to this success was the newly launched iPhone 13 and iPhone SE series (2022) which started to become the driving force behind sales in the lower segment” – Strategy “Apple also accounted for the highest first-quarter market share since 2013 ahead of top Chinese brands,” Analytics added.

In addition, IDC said: “Our research shows that Samsung and Apple have navigated the supply chain situation slightly better than their competitors.”

IDC continued: “Samsung leads the supplier race with the top position and 23.4% market share, the largest market share in any quarter since the first quarter of 2018”. “Apple is second with 18.0% market share.”

The three analytics firms with different metrics all have a similar outlook for Apple and for the smartphone market as a whole. Canalys said 311.2 million smartphones were shipped in the first quarter of 2022, while Strategy Analytics estimates 314 million and IDC at 31.4 million.

All of the companies analyzed above agree that this overall figure represents a significant decrease since the same time in 2021. IDC saw the smallest drop, 8.9%, while Canalys and Strategy Analytics both posted a decrease of 11% year-on-year.

Canalys analyst Toby Zhu said: “The Chinese market has caused the decline by almost half worldwide, mainly due to the seasonal factor. The strict pandemic control policy has led to the decline closed in major cities in China, casting a shadow over the consumer market in the short term.”
