Peru’s president almost got impeached because his plane was late

Bad weather delayed the Peruvian president’s flight from Ecuador, putting him at risk of being impeached by parliament for not being on time.

Peruvian President Pedro Castillo flew to the Ecuadorian city of Loja on the morning of April 29 to co-chair a bilateral cabinet meeting with his counterpart Guillermo Lasso. Before Mr Castillo left, the opposition-controlled parliament required him to return home before midnight as required by the constitution.

However, on the evening of April 29, the plane carrying President Castillo could not take off from Loja due to bad weather, putting him at risk of being impeached and removed by parliament. The situation forced the Peruvian leader to travel by car from Loja city, 264 km from the border to return home on time.

The journey by car takes about 5 hours. He arrived at the border in Tumbes about an hour before the deadline and escaped impeachment, according to local media.
