Russia has set a schedule to withdraw from the ISS space station

Russia has decided when to withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) and will give a year’s notice to its partners, Roscosmos director Dmitry Rogozin said on April 30.

In an interview with Rossiya-24 TV channel, the head of the space agency said that although a timeframe has been established, authorities “have no obligation to make it public.”

Mr Rogozin previously said Western sanctions were preventing Roscosmos from conducting “normal operations” when it came to working with the US and other Western countries on the ISS.

In the interview, he noted that the terms of Russia’s operations on the ISS are decided by the Russian government and president, and the agency is currently allowed to continue operating on the ISS until 2024.

He said: “I can only say one thing: under our obligations, we will warn our partners one year in advance of the end of work on the ISS.”

Mr. Rogozin also explained that for the rest of his time on the ISS, Russia “will demonstrate readiness for the deployment of the Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS).”

He said ROSS will be a multi-function station and development plans are already underway.

Mr. Rogozin said: “We will start creating the ‘smart hardware’ and prepare to launch it into space for station deployment.”

Earlier, the head of Roscosmos had predicted that the ISS, where NASA plans to operate until 2030, would “disintegrate” by that time unless “huge amounts” are invested in the repair of the station, but In the current geopolitical situation, the ISS will no longer work effectively for Russia.

In mid-March, Mr. Rogozin said the “hostile” geopolitical situation could force Russia to make the ROSS station “militarily usable”. According to Rogozin, that means “there will be no one” on ROSS other than Russian cosmonauts, who will “operate the equipment installed at the station.”
