Serbia’s message when “showing off” Chinese missiles, Russian planes

The show took place at Batajnica military airport, near the capital Belgrade, on April 30. Notably, both the people and the media are informed by the authorities Serbia invite to visit.

Here, Serbia demonstrated new Chinese-made surface-to-air missiles and other military hardware purchased from both Russia and the West, in an attempt to balance relations with the parties, according to Reuters.

China has handed over to Serbia the FK-3 air defense system in early April. This system is considered similar to the Russian S-300 system or the US Patriot system.

Serbia is currently the only European country to operate China’s FK-3 missile system, the CH-92A drone. They also have Airbus helicopters, Chinese armed drones and Russian MIG-29 jets.

“I am proud of the great progress of the Serbian army. We will significantly increase the combat capabilities of the air force. Serbia is a neutral country and Serbia must find solutions to protect the skies and our country,” said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic when attending the event on April 30.

President Vucic said that Serbia plans to buy 12 Rafale multirole fighters from France by the end of this year or early next year. In addition, Serbia is also negotiating to buy 12 Typhoon fighters from the UK.

Serbia, which has centuries of religious, ethnic and political ties to Russia, is also eager to join the European Union. Therefore, Reuters news agency said the event was organized by Serbia to balance the partnership with all parties, including NATO.

In fact, when China transferred the FK-3 missile system to Serbia, it made some Western countries, including Germany, “unsatisfied”. Berlin once warned Belgrade that it needed to “align its foreign policy with the EU if it wanted to become a member of the bloc”.

Serbia has three times voted in favor of Russia at the United Nations but has not imposed sanctions on Moscow since the conflict with Ukraine on February 24, according to Reuters.

Serbia’s military depends on the (former) Soviet Union’s technological background and Russia is one of the main suppliers of weapons to the country. Belgrade is also dependent on gas and oil from Russia.
