On April 30, the Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for an attack attack on mosque in the Afghan capital Kabul a day earlier, killing at least 10 believers.

A statement on the IS Telegram account said an explosive device placed near a bus in Sector 6 in Kabul was detonated and targeted the Khalifa Sahib mosque in western Kabul during Friday prayers.

IS said the attack killed 10 people, matching the number reported by the Interior Ministry.

The target of the attack appeared to be members of the Sufi minority who were performing their prayers after the end of the prayer service.

At least 10 people were killed, while Kabul police said 30 others were injured, said Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor.

The Taliban, which was listed as a terrorist organization by the United Nations in 2003, took power in Afghanistan after capturing the capital Kabul on August 15, 2021.

It is one of the latest in a series of attacks to rock Afghanistan during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

On the same day, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement condemning the bombing in the Afghan capital.

In a statement, the secretary general’s spokesman said Mr Guterres had expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Who are the Taliban?

The Taliban is a radical Sunni Muslim movement founded in the early 1990s after the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989. The Taliban took power in 1996. In 2001, the Taliban regime was overthrown during a military campaign. America’s “Sustained Freedom” with the support of the NATO Alliance.

During the Taliban rule, the harshest Islamic Sharia law was applied. The Taliban has helped the leaders of the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda hide and continue to support its fighters, after the Taliban regime was overthrown in Afghanistan. In 2003, the United Nations listed the Taliban as a terrorist organization.
