The best herbs to grow indoors

When deciding what to plant, choose herbs you like and will use more often. For example, some people don’t like the taste of coriander and prefer parsley instead.

Basil: One of the few healthy herbs, basil likes warm temperatures (23 degrees Celsius) and full sun. Basil is a versatile soft herb that can be used in sauces, pesto or garnish for Italian dishes.

chives: A member of the allium family, chives are versatile to grow in full sun or partial shade. They usually need more moisture than other herbs. Chives have a crunchy texture and mild onion flavor, making them a good choice for dishes like baked potatoes.

Coriander: Growing from the coriander plant (the same plant that produces coriander seeds), this soft herb does well in full sun or partial shade. Similar to parsley, parsley is a popular addition to refreshing sauces and dips, especially in Mexican cooking.

Dill: This plant in the celery family can be grown in full sun. Used in dipping sauces, with fish dishes or as a pickling condiment…

Mint: Mint prefers less sun than other herbs, making it a staple herb for east-facing windows. This herb also needs moist soil, so plan on watering more often. Mint can be used in anything from morning tea to chocolate desserts.

Oregano: This plant grows well in partial sun. Oregano belongs to the mint family and is less mild as a fresh herb than when dried. Warm and aromatic, oregano leaves are an ideal addition to protein, pasta and potato dishes.

Parsley: A restaurant staple as a popular garnish, parsley is an easy herb to grow because it can thrive in cooler temperatures. It doesn’t need as much sun as other herbs, although it will need moisture. Flat leaf parsley is more common than the curly parsley you find in restaurants. Plus, curly parsley grows too slowly.

Rosemary: This fragrant woody herb can tolerate full sun but grows ideally in a cooler location. Rosemary is a hardy herb that is sturdy enough to make soups, stews and braises without going bad.

Sage: Another member of the mint family, sage thrives in full sun conditions. You often see it paired with heavier dishes, such as roast pork.

Thyme: This popular woody herb grows in full or partial sun. Thyme is not as pungent as its woody relative, rosemary, but it bears a similar flavor profile to mint, citrus, and lavender.
