According to Bloomberg news, two newly discovered sublines BA.4 and BA.5 of the Omicron variant can evade vaccines as well as evade the natural human immune system acquired after contracting COVID-19.

Two sub-lines BA.4 and BA.5 discovered by South African scientists in April, are more contagious than both the original Omicron variant as well as the previously discovered BA.2 sub-line.

Through the study, the blood samples obtained showed that the amount of neutralizing antibodies in both vaccinated and unvaccinated people decreased, especially low in the unvaccinated group.

Thus, the unvaccinated group does not have resistance to 2 new sub-variants, thereby posing a potential risk that BA.4 and BA.5 may cause a new wave of infection.

The study results were published in the context of an increase in the number of new cases in South Africa – the country experiencing the first wave of the COVID-19 epidemic due to the Omicron variant.
