From the heritage “heart” of the Malay community in Singapore…
Going back in time about 200 years ago, Kampong Gelam (or Kampong Glam) was once the prosperous capital of the Malay Royal Family. Located right in the heritage land is Istana Kampong Gelam – formerly the palace where the Malay Muslim monarchs lived.
Today, the grounds of the Istana Kampong Gelam palace have been restored to the Malay Heritage Centre. Six permanent galleries, preserved historical artifacts, and a series of interactive activities take visitors one after another into the life of Singapore’s second largest ethnic community.
The Malay Heritage Center is located on the “golden land” of the Muslim palace.

And just a few steps away, let the magnificent, golden domes of the Sultan’s Shrine (or Masjid Sultan) lead the way. The temple was built by Sultan Hussein Shah – one of the first Muslim kings of Singapore in 1824 with a large prayer hall that can accommodate up to 5,000 people.
The Sultan’s Temple was recognized as a National Monument in 1975.
More specifically, this is a temple in Singapore that owns an external loudspeaker system to serve worshipers to pray; and is one of the first mosques to achieve ISO 9001:2015 certification. The scale, outstanding architecture and historical value have turned the Sultan’s Temple into one of the iconic religious works of Lion Island.

… to the explosive vitality of a contemporary cultural rendezvous
On the same coordinates, as soon as you step out of the majestic space of the Temple, Muscat street immediately treats you with a “party” of rich colors. A trading center from the 19th to early 20th centuries, Muscat Street is now the perfect destination for art and heritage lovers. Weaving in the alleys of this street, visitors will encounter Gelam Gallery – where the spirit of creativity and free inspiration is expressed in frescoes and graffiti one after another.

Continuing along the pretty streets, you’ll be greeted by Haji Lane – a characterful residential area nestled in the heart of Kampong Gelam. It’s a popular spot for local creatives, and it’s also a rendezvous for Instagram-ers and true fashionistas.
Haji Lane – The “must-go” place of Instagram followers
A row of houses and shops built in the 19th century has now transformed into a complex of cafes, bars and trendy lifestyle shops. Looking through modern doorways, few would expect that this was once a place where poor Malay families lived, or a refuge for Muslims on pilgrimages to Mecca.

It is not without reason that many puns like to use the word glam (or charm) to describe Kampong Glam. Many surprises are still hidden under the cultural – historical layers; and this neighborhood is still waiting for you to find your very own glam on a visit to the nearest Lion Island.
