Muhammad Ali’s nephew won the first half by knockout

Knocking out Alejandro Ibarra in Las Vegas on May 1, Nico Ali Walsh – grandson of heavyweight boxing legend Muhammad Ali – raised the winning streak to five matches.

Walsh played Ibarra in the reserve match, warming up for the main event between Shakur Stevenson and Oscar Valdez at the MGM Grand. When the first half had a few seconds left, the American boxer threw two hooks – left and right – in the face, causing Ibarra to collapse in the ring. The referee immediately went in to check on Ibarra’s condition, then waved his hand to give Walsh the victory.

Walsh, 21, is the son of Rasheda Ali – the second oldest daughter of the legendary Muhammad Ali’s nine children. He revealed that his mother was as emotional as watching Muhammad Ali fight again. “This is just a testament to the effort I’ve put in. Victory like this will come if you focus on training. I’m like bringing my grandfather back into the ring. That’s why my mother is so proud of me. emotional, because my mother felt like seeing Muhammad Ali and hearing his name in the ring,” Walsh said after the win.

Walsh extended his winning streak to five matches, including four by knockout, while Ibarra received his second defeat in nine professional fights. “I wanted to hit the right hook. I saw Ibarra’s left hand go down when he put it. I wanted to counter it, and that’s what I did,” Walsh added of the knock-out. “I wish Ibarra and his team all the best. Ibarra is a true fighter. But I planned that counter-attack. I waited for the opportunity and took it well.”

Muhammad Ali, real name Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr, died in 2016, two days after being hospitalized for breathing problems. During his lifetime, Ali once called himself “the greatest of the greats”. Ali first fought a professional fight on October 29, 1960, and took another four years to become world heavyweight champion, at the age of 22, after defeating Sonny Liston. During his professional career, Ali fought 61 matches, won 56 matches, including 37 by knockout, and lost five.

One of Ali’s few defeats in his career was when he lost to compatriot Joe Frazier in 1971. Before the boxing world knew about the recent “fight of the century” between Mayweather and Pacquiao, Ali – Frazier is the first confrontation to be assigned that beautiful name.
