Russia says May 9 anniversary has nothing to do with operation in Ukraine

The Russian Foreign Minister said that the anniversary of Victory Day 9/5 has no impact on military activities in Ukraine, when the West is speculating about this milestone.

“Our soldiers will not rely on any specific date to decide their actions,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said yesterday when asked if Victory Day on May 9 marked a turning point in the war. conflict in Ukraine or not.

US intelligence earlier last month said that Russia changed its strategy to focus on gaining control Donbass and other regions in eastern Ukraine, with the goal of completion by May 9. This is a historic day for Russia, marking the surrender of Nazi Germany in World War II, often celebrated with a large parade of troops and military hardware on Red Square in front of the Kremlin.

Lavrov said Russia would celebrate Victory Day solemnly, but insisted the duration and speed of the operation in Ukraine would depend on the need to reduce risks to Russian civilians and soldiers.

Lavrov affirmed that Russia is always committed to cooperation to prevent the risk of nuclear war.

“Western media misrepresents threats from Russia,” he said. “Russia has never interrupted efforts to reach agreements to ensure that a nuclear war never breaks out.”

Director of the Central Intelligence Agency America (CIA) William Burns in April expressed fear Russia may use tactical nuclear weapons or low-yield nuclear weapons in Ukraine, although there is no evidence to support this concern.

Russian President Putin since February has ordered strategic deterrence forces, including those carrying nuclear weapons, to be on high alert and put on alert state, ready to receive combat orders. However, British and US officials say they have not detected any significant changes in the Russian nuclear force after Putin’s alarm.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at the end of March that “no one in Russia thought about the use or even the idea of using nuclear weapons”. According to Peskov, Russia will only use nuclear weapons in the event of “a threat to the very existence” of the country.

Tactical nukes and low yield nuclear weapons are designed for use on the battlefield. Some experts estimate that Russia possesses about 2,000 weapons of this type, which can be transferred to the air forces, navy and army.
