According to the newspaper South China Morning Poston the morning of May 2, officials of Putuo district, Shanghai confirmed the mistake.

The Putuo district government also launched a quick investigation amid public anger after an elderly citizen was mistakenly thought to be dead and handed over to the morgue by elderly care center staff.

A few hours later, they announced the results of the investigation. Accordingly, four officials, a director of the aforementioned center and a doctor were fired or reprimanded. Among those fired are the director of the aged care center and a doctor who has been banned from practice and will face further police investigation.

The incident, which took place on the afternoon of May 1, caused a stir in the online community after videos went viral on Chinese social media, showing two men who appeared to be morgue workers handling a bag. Yellow bodies are kept outside the Xinchangzheng Welfare Hospital in Shanghai, an elderly care center in Putuo.

The two mortuary workers wearing the aforementioned blue protective gear were seen opening the body bag in front of an employee of the aged care center and confirmed that the person in the bag was still alive.

The center’s staff, after checking for vital signs, closed the bag, despite the objections of two staff members wearing protective gear due to fear that the patient would suffocate. According to the video, the employee then returned to the center to consult with two others before pushing the patient in the yellow bag back inside.

The incident caused a wave of backlash for many Shanghai residents, who have been tired since the city’s blockade to fight the epidemic since March 28 until now.
