According to Reuters news agency, the Chief of Staff of the Spanish Prime Minister Felix Bolanos today (May 2) confirmed the above information. Speaking at a press conference, Bolanos said Prime Minister Sanchez’s mobile phone had been infected with spyware since May 2021 and that at least one data leak had occurred since then. The official did not say who spied on the prime minister or whether there were any foreign or domestic groups suspected of being behind the incident.

Mr. Bolanos said that such interference is illegal and the case has been reported to the Justice Department and the Supreme Court will handle the case.

The information was released after the left-wing coalition government came under heavy pressure to explain things, after digital rights group Citizen Lab said there were more than 60 people involved in the movement. Catalan separatists became the target of Pegasus software, created by the Israeli corporation NSO.

The European Union (EU) data protection watchdog has called for a ban on the use of Pegasus software, accusing it of being abused by client governments to spy on human rights activists and journalists. and politicians.

Previously, Western media reported, Pegasus spyware was used to target many high-ranking EU officials. It is currently unclear which country used Pegasus to carry out these wiretappings.

The NSO Group, maker of the Pegasus spyware, has repeatedly denied the spyware was used to spy on European officials. The company claims to cooperate in any investigation to determine whether abuse of its products has occurred.
