This is a very rare case, which makes many people find it very hard to believe.

In a report published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), there was a man whose enlarged heart filled his entire chest cavity. He was diagnosed with a rare adult heart syndrome.

Doctors explained that the man’s condition was common in newborns – Ebstein’s congenital heart disease. He was taken to the hospital after feeling short of breath for six months.

Doctors performed a chest X-ray and found that the patient’s heart was enlarged. Doctors often call this an enlarged heart.

Professor of cardiology at University College London Robert Anderson told Newsweek: “This is a very rare condition in adults. The heart occupies the entire thoracic cavity.

Although this condition is rare in adults, it often occurs in infants younger than 4 weeks of age. The patient has pulmonary atrophy but the ventricular septum remains intact, the heart becomes enlarged to fill the chest cavity.

Professor Anderson says the condition is very dangerous for babies, because the enlarged heart presses on the lungs, making it impossible for the lungs to function properly. When a child is found to have this condition, the prognosis is often very poor.

How dangerous is Ebstein’s congenital heart disease?

This congenital heart defect is present from birth, only the valve between the right chambers of the heart (tricuspid valve) does not close correctly.

This means that instead of opening up so that blood can flow from the top chamber of the heart (right atrium) to the bottom chamber of the heart (right ventricle), the tricuspid valve cannot move, resulting in blood leaking. leak back into the atrium. Over time, the heart becomes enlarged and weak, leading to heart failure.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, USA, 1 in 20,000 babies have Ebstein anomaly, accounting for less than 1% of congenital heart defects.

In the case of adults with this condition, Cleveland Clinic says, Ebstrin heart defects tend to be mild. When the heart is enlarged, its function weakens and surgery is required.

The man above was treated with anticoagulants, diuretics, vasodilators. He then underwent surgery to remove and correct the aneurysm in the left atrium. He also had his heart valve replaced with a 23mm St.Jude mechanical valve.

The surgery was successful, the patient’s health stabilized and gradually recovered.
