Air One, the world’s first airport for electric flying cars and drones, opens in Coventry, England. Interesting Engineering reported on April 29. If successful, Air One will pave the way to hundreds of other airports around the world.

The market for advanced aviation vehicles could reach $12.4 billion in the world by 2027, researchers say. While engineers and designers work on planes that take off and land directly, Standing to bring them into service for urban traffic, Urban-Air Port – a UK-based startup – also strives to prove that the infrastructure required for them is not as complex as many people think.

Air One is Urban-Air Port’s first pop-up airport (temporary airport), completed in 15 months, including planning and construction. This is a collaborative project between Coventry City Council and Urban-Air Port to demonstrate how urban air transport can help reduce air pollution and road congestion.

The Air One is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The airport is designed to be fully automated and combined with electric vehicles to provide a zero-emission urban public transport system. Air One has partnered with Supernal, Hyundai’s air transport company, to use a full-size prototype of the SA-1 flying taxi as a demonstration vehicle.

Ricky Sandhu, founder of Urban-Air Port, describes the opening of the airport as an important milestone. “This is the beginning of a new era of transportation, a zero-emissions, zero-congestion era in cities, which in turn makes people healthier, happier and more connected,” said Sandhu.

Air One will open to the public this summer, after which Urban-Air Port plans to dismantle it and move it to other locations in the UK so more people can see the airport in action. During Air-One’s opening, demonstration flights of police and cargo drones will take place at the airport.

Sandhu plans to open more than 200 flying car airports around the world, with plans underway in locations in London, Los Angeles, Australia, South Korea, France, Germany, Scandinavia and Southeast Asia.
