China licenses driverless taxis

The driverless taxi service operates on open roads in an area of about 60 square kilometers in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone.

Baidu will deploy 10 self-driving cars, while Pony will operate 4 and will add more cars in the future. Pony alone will still have a safety supervisor sitting in the front passenger seat. Baidu said that users can order driverless taxis through the Apollo Go mobile app.

Driverless taxis are now licensed in Beijing and seven other cities. This number is projected to increase to 65 cities by 2025 and 100 cities by 2030.
