EU wants to punish Russian oil, Hungary threatens to veto

Poland, like Bulgaria, has seen gas supplies from Russia shut down due to their refusal to pay in rubles.

Meanwhile, two German ministers said the country was ready to support the EU to impose an immediate ban on Russian oil imports.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck told reporters before attending a meeting with EU officials on May 2: “Germany is not against the Russian oil ban. Of course it’s a burden to face, but we do. I’ll be ready to do it.” Mr. Habeck added that Germany would support the EU ban, regardless of whether the ban takes place immediately or at the end of the year.

Habeck believes Europe’s largest economy will be able to pull through if it stops importing oil from Russia, although that decision will inevitably lead to shortages.

If the Russian oil ban is implemented immediately, Finance Minister Christian Lindner insists Germany can completely withstand it. Mr. Lindner said: “We can now give up coal and oil imported from Russia. The possibility that fuel prices will not be ruled out.”

On the same day, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz affirmed in an interview with TV channel ZDF: “Sanctions against Russia imposed after its military operation in Ukraine will not be lifted without an agreement reached between Kiev and Moscow.”

Mr. Scholz said that Russian President Vladimir Putin should “come to agreements with Ukraine”. The German chancellor also noted that this should not be a “peace-imposed” agreement that only serves Russia’s terms. The German chancellor also reiterated Germany’s refusal to recognize Crimea as part of Russia after its 2014 annexation.

The German chancellor added that he had no plans to visit Kiev after President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s planned trip was canceled due to Ukraine’s objections.
