Germany announces readiness to ban Russian oil

Two German ministers said Germany is ready to support the EU to impose an immediate ban on Russian oil imports.

Germany cut its oil imports from Russia from 35% to 12% before Moscow launched a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24. Berlin is trying to find new supplies to replace the oil coming from the Schwedt refinery run by Russian state company Rosneft.

“We still don’t have a solution for the refinery in Schwedt,” he said. “We can’t guarantee that the supply will be constant. There will certainly be price spikes and there will be some outages. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to fall into a crisis. oil”.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner meanwhile asserted that Germany can completely withstand an immediate ban on Russian oil. “Now we can give up coal and oil from Russia,” he said. “The possibility that fuel prices will increase cannot be ruled out.”

Two EU diplomats said late last week that the bloc was aiming to ban Russian oil imports by the end of the year as part of a sixth package of sanctions against Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine.
