SEA Games 31 canceled 2 contents for objective reasons
According to SEA Games regulations on the number of teams participating in the competition, collective sports must have 3 or more registered teams before the Organizing Committee is allowed to include them in the official list of competitions. Previously, the women’s beach handball content was withdrawn from the events competed at the 31st SEA Games because there were only 2 participating teams registered, Thailand and the host Vietnam.
This is a disadvantage for the Vietnamese women’s handball team. According to experts, the team is highly appreciated at this tournament. This also caused the Vietnamese sports delegation to miss an appointment with a gold medal.

At the 31st SEA Games affirmation conference taking place in Hanoi, the countries finalize the number of subjects participating in the congress. In athletics, only Indonesia and Thailand registered to compete in the women’s weightlifting event and the men’s hammer throw event, only Malaysia and Thailand registered to compete. Due to not enough countries to register, the host Vietnam was forced to cancel the above 2 contents from the congress. This decision was agreed by the countries on May 3.
With 3 events not appearing at SEA Games 31 due to insufficient number of participants, women’s beach handball, women’s weightlifting and men’s hammer throwing, the number of contents competed at SEA Games 31 decreased from 526 events. down to codn 523 content, but the number of subjects remains unchanged.
In beach handball, the women’s team did not have the opportunity to compete, but fortunately, the Vietnamese men’s handball team was still able to compete because the men’s content had 4 countries registered to participate. At the 30th SEA Games, the Vietnamese men’s handball team was the last team to win the gold medal when it won after two sets with the scores 19-16, 20-10 against Indonesia, thereby helping the Vietnamese sports team Nam won a total of 98 gold medals at the Games.
At the 31st Southeast Asian Games, the Vietnamese delegation attended with 1,341 members, including 951 athletes (532 women, 419 men); 250 coaches, 30 experts. In which, the Vietnamese athletics team has the largest number, 65 athletes, competing in 40/45 content and striving to win 16-17 gold medals at the 31st SEA Games.
