While many European leaders have publicly stated that they will not buy Russian gas in rubles as requested by President Putin, the 10 countries of the European Union (EU) have done what Russia demanded.

According to RT news agency, Hungarian government official Gergely Gulyas said so on May 1. According to Mr. Gulyas, the leaders of the above European countries do not admit it to be considered “a good European”.

Mr. Gulyas said Hungary had opened a Euro account at Gazprombank of Russia, and then convert the payments into rubles to pay Russian suppliers. The system allows European buyers to comply with a requirement that Russian President Putin made in March that unfriendly countries pay for gas in rubles.

Mr. Gulyas, now chief of staff to the Prime Minister of Hungary, said: “There are nine other countries that are using a similar payment method, but because now the idea of being a good European also means the leaders of those countries are not honest when they speak on the international stage or with their own people, those nine countries will not say they do the same thing,” said Mr. Gulyas. importing raw materials from Russia use the same way to pay for the purchase of Russian gas.”

It is not clear which EU countries Mr. Gulyas is referring to. Russian energy giant Gazprom has suspended supplies to Poland and Bulgaria after both countries refused to pay in rubles. However, according to a Bloomberg report last week, 10 EU member states have set up accounts at Gazprombank and 4 have used this mechanism to pay for Russian gas purchases.

Due to its dependence on gas imported from Russia, Hungary has opposed EU sanctions on this important item. Mr. Gulyas yesterday (May 1) reiterated his commitment to continue buying gas from Russia and opposed Brussels’ sanctions policy. “We don’t apply sanctions that we have to pay first instead of those that we want to punish,” Mr Gulyas said, referring to soaring energy costs across Europe.

While the government of Budapest condemns Russia’s special military operation in UkraineMr. Guylas said that the country would “continue to buy energy from Russia as cheaply as possible” to offset the cost to the Hungarian people.
