Unexpected benefits of avocado

Research has just been published in the JAHA page of the American Heart Association that eating avocados (image) at least 2 times a week reduced the risk of heart attack by 21% compared with people who did not eat.

Scientists at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health (USA) followed more than 68,000 women and 41,000 men participating in two long-term studies. Nurses’ Health Study (rough translation: Research health of nurses) and Health Professionals Follow-up Study (rough translation: Health monitoring research) by the US government. Participants were monitored for risk factors for chronic disease.

At the start of the study, all participants were free of diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke. Every 4 years for 30 years, participants had to complete a dietary questionnaire.

One serving of avocado in the study was 80 grams. When people who eat avocados regularly and replace half a serving of margarine, eggs, yogurt, and cheese a day with the same amount of butter, the results show that the risk of cardiovascular disease is reduced by 16 – 22%.

When replacing butter with nuts, olives and vegetable oils, the effect reduce cardiovascular risk unchanged. The scientists also found no effect of avocado in reducing the risk of stroke.

“This study is proof that avocados have health benefits. Improving eating with a healthy diet, lots of green vegetables and fruits is necessary,” epidemiologist Cheryl Anderson, of the American Heart Association, commented on CNN.
