US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi makes a surprise visit to Ukraine

This is the highest US official to come visit Ukraine since Russia started Special military operation in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he held a meeting with Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in the capital Kiev. Writing on Twitter, Mr. Zelensky stated that he was meeting with the Speaker of the US House of Representatives in Kiev and that the US was the country leading the effort to support Ukraine in the conflict. Zelensky’s tweet also included a video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of the US Congress being led to the government compound. The President of Ukraine was escorted by his bodyguards to receive the American delegation.

Joining the US congressional delegation during this secret visit to Kiev were Mr. Adam Schiff, Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee; Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

This is the second high-level US delegation to Kiev, following a visit in late April by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

At a meeting with the President of the host country Zelensky, Ms. Pelosi pledged that the United States would stand with Kiev. At the same time, she said, the US House of Representatives will soon approve a $33 billion aid package for Ukraine at the request of President Joe Biden.

Last week, the US Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State also made a secret visit to Ukraine.

Most recent high-level visits by Western leaders to Ukraine are kept secret until the last minute, only being announced after the event has taken place or the delegation has arrived.

The visit of Ms. Pelosi and US lawmakers comes a few days after President Joe Biden announced a plan to allocate $33 billion in national defense and economic aid to Ukraine, including the budget to buy weapons for the nation. Eastern European countries account for more than 20 billion USD. The budget package is awaiting approval by the US House of Representatives.
