China and South Korea discuss security situation on the Korean peninsula

This is the first visit of China’s nuclear envoy Liu Xiaoming to Seoul (South Korea) since taking office in April 2021.

The meeting between South Korea’s Special Envoy for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs Noh Kyu-duk and his Chinese counterpart Liu Xiaoming took place in the context of escalating tensions over the missile test Pyongyang’s recent announcement and signs that North Korea is preparing for another nuclear test.

According to South Korea’s Foreign Ministry, the two sides shared their assessments of the current regional security situation and discussed how to “satisfy” the issue.

Noh expressed concern about North Korea’s threatening actions, including the restoration of the Punggye-ri nuclear test facility. He suggested Beijing’s “constructive” role in efforts to persuade Pyongyang to refrain from further provocations and resume dialogue.

For his part, Mr. Liu Xiaoming expressed concern about the growing tension on the Korean peninsula. Mr. Liu Xiaoming agreed on the need for close cooperation between relevant parties to stabilize the regional security situation, and reaffirmed China’s commitment to support a peaceful resolution of the issue. Korean island; China plays an “active role”, but the key to solving the North Korean problem depends on Pyongyang and Washington.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Chinese envoy noted a “new change” in the security situation on the Korean peninsula, and highlighted the importance of joint efforts to resolve the issue.

Liu appeared to be referring to a series of missile launches by North Korea and threats to use nuclear weapons if necessary for the country’s “fundamental interests”.
