Europe before the “epidemic” of obesity related to the death of 1.2 million people

According to the WHO report on the status of fat In Europe published on May 3, obesity rates in Europe are constantly increasing, with nearly a quarter of the continent’s adults being obese.

The WHO report describes obesity as an “epidemic” because the rate at which people encounter the problem is increasing rapidly in large numbers. The number of obese people in Europe has increased by 138% over the past five decades and the continent is now home to the second highest adult obesity rate after the Americas.

Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, said that weight gain and obesity have many health consequences, which can lead to cancer and heart disease.

According to WHO calculations, obesity is the cause of at least 13 different types of cancer and is likely to cause about 200,000 new cancers each year.

The report explains, the COVID-19 pandemic is one of the reasons why many people’s waistlines are growing. The lockdowns have facilitated “an unhealthy diet or sedentary lifestyle”.

However, according to the authors, the causes of obesity are “much more complex” than previously thought, according to which obesity is merely a consequence of overeating and inactivity.

Each year 1.2 million people die in Europe from diseases caused by being overweight and obese.

The prevalence of overweight was higher in men than in women, with 63% of men and 54% of women. One in three children is overweight or obese.

Facing the above alarming situation, the World Health Organization recommends limiting the opening of fast food restaurants in low-income areas, improving food labeling for children, encouraging women to breastfeeding mothers after giving birth and building a healthy eating program for children.
