President Biden signaled a deeper intervention in Ukraine

Mr. Biden described the US role in the conflict as a “first step” in a civilized competition with Russia and China. In addition, Mr. Biden also promised to send billions of dollars more in aid to Kiev.

“We are at a historic turning point. This turning point comes about every six to eight generations. Things are changing rapidly so we need to take measures,” he said.

It’s unclear what “turning point” Biden was referring to, but six to eight generations corresponds to roughly 100 to 200 years ago.

In his speech, President Biden continued to describe the US mission in Ukraine as more important than just transporting weapons to allies.

“There is a war going on between autocracy and democracy, I would say China and Russia are ‘rivals’ of Western democracies,” he said.

He added the conflict in Ukraine was the “first clash” between these regimes.

Washington’s rhetoric on Ukraine has hardened in recent weeks. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently stated that: “We would like to see Russia weakened to the point where it can no longer do what it did when it launched its special military operation in Ukraine.”

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the NATO military alliance of “basically waging a proxy war with Moscow”. Responding to this issue, on May 3, Mr. Biden acknowledged that the US was engaged in a proxy war with Russia, telling workers at the Lockheed Martin factory that US arms shipments were aimed at ” enabling the Ukrainian people to defend themselves without risking a third world war.”

Mr. Biden has requested an additional $33 billion in military aid to Ukraine, as well as funding for relevant US government agencies in the country. Highlighting the importance of Javelin anti-tank missiles manufactured at the Alabama plant, Biden compared supplying these weapons to Ukraine with arming America’s allies during World War II. .

Mr. Biden told workers that even more Ukrainian parents were naming their newborns “Javelin or Javelina” in honor of the American-made rocket. This statement was originally made last month by Ukrainian journalist and Azov regiment member Ilya Ponomarenko.
