For his part, a statement from the Elysée Palace said Mr Macron had expressed “deep concern over the situation in the city of Mariupol and the Donbass region”. Macron also called on Putin to allow the evacuation of people from the Azovstal metallurgical complex, which has been surrounded and attacked by Russian forces for several days.
