Separate lanes for self-driving cars
AmericaA section of Interstate 94 between Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan, is being set up to become a dedicated lane for self-driving cars.
This specialized road is being developed by startup Cavnue. In 2020, Cavnue was selected by the Michigan state government to develop a “first-ever connected corridor for self-driving cars.” The 40km stretch will connect the two cities of the state, according to Automotive News.
The plan is to dedicate a lane for high-tech vehicles, building the necessary infrastructure in accordance with the new technology. To achieve the goal, Cavnue will work with the Michigan Department of Transportation to conduct traffic research, environmental analysis, road design, and operation planning.
Cavnue has received investments totaling 130 million USD. Chief among the investors are Ford and Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners. The cost of the project is yet to be determined, but Cavnue expects a nine-figure investment.
The Michigan government has plans to exploit the infrastructure for self-driving technology on other roads in the state, but Route 94 was chosen because it is “cleaner, less complicated”. It is expected that it will not be until 2024-2025, the lane dedicated to self-driving cars will come into operation.
