The fate of a teacher who specializes in blood donation, has blood cancer without a bone marrow transplant

Teacher Nguyen Van Hai (SN 1997) was born into a purely agricultural family in Quang Thach commune (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province). In 2019, Mr. Hai graduated from university and taught at the Education and Vocational Training Center of Dong Hoi city.

Whether in his student days or during his years of teaching at vocational schools, Nguyen Van Hai was always enthusiastic in activities. Mr. Hai has donated blood to save lives 11 times and is the chairman of the Living Blood Bank Club of Quang Binh University.

When working at the Education and Vocational Training Center of Ho Chi Minh City. In Dong Hoi, Mr. Hai is always connected with the Vietnam – Cuba Friendship Hospital Dong Hoi, whenever there is information from the hospital that there is an emergency patient in need of blood, the club will notify the contact for members of the same blood type and closest to the hospital. If the blood type is rare, the members have to post online to find blood donors.

In early 2021, teacher Hai married Pham Thi Thu Thao. Later that year, his family welcomed their first granddaughter. The thought of a happy family life, it seems that Mr. Hai himself was diagnosed with blood cancer.

From the time he was diagnosed with the disease until now, about 5 months, the life of Mr. Hai and his family has been turned upside down when he has to run for every penny to get him medical treatment.

Struggling to find life

Mr. Hai confided, “On the occasion of Vietnamese Teachers’ Day, November 20, 2021, when I was sick, I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with blood cancer. When I heard the news, my eyes were almost dark, I don’t know how long I will live. Many nights I stay up all night thinking about my young children and elderly parents.

When being treated at the hospital, the doctors encouraged and informed him that he had a chance to live if he received a bone marrow transplant early. The hope of saving a life flashed, motivating Mr. Hai to fight the disease. But that hope is also slim.

Mr. Nguyen Van Xuan (Hai’s father) shared: “I love my son, I have run to many places to borrow money to help him get a bone marrow transplant and maintain his life. Hai’s younger brother is studying in Japan (under a full scholarship). part of FPT University), worked a part-time job to buy a plane ticket to donate bone marrow for him.It took more than 50 million to take samples and grow marrow. try to sell all assets but not enough”.

Ms. Thao, Mr. Hai’s wife recounted, “Every time I went to the hospital, I was too busy to take care of him, so my grandfather was almost 70 years old and had to go with him. My mother at home borrowed or pledged some money and sent it out. I hope you live to be a support for your elderly parents and for children who still have a father.”

Mr. Tran Trung Dung – Vice Chairman of Quang Thach Commune People’s Committee confirmed that teacher Nguyen Van Hai’s family in village 7, Quang Thach commune is a household with difficult circumstances, all income now depends on agriculture.

“Teacher Hai’s family has 6 people, his parents are old farmers. Hai is the main laborer in the house, since he was ill, his wife also took maternity leave at home to raise children without a job. Now add a serious illness that costs a lot to treat. Now that the marrow is available, patient Hai is ready for a bone marrow transplant, but the money is not available so it cannot be done, so he is being treated with a prescription at home “- Mr. Dung informed.
