According to an article on Mainichi Shinbun, Kondo is famous for his official marriage to a world-famous virtual hologram character, produced by technology company Gatebox. While this marriage is not recognized by Japanese law, Kondo spent about 2 million yen (about $17,300) on the wedding ceremony and invited only 39 close friends to the ceremony, without the presence of her groom’s family. Unfortunately for the couple, in 2020, Gatebox will stop providing AI services for holograms, causing previous AI-powered holograms to connect to the internet with a central server to work, similar to how Alexa. Amazon’s or Apple’s Siri works.

Although Kondo is sad that the hologram can’t talk to him anymore, he insists that his love for the virtual female singer still remains. “My love for Miku has not changed. I got married because I thought I could be with her forever,” Kondo said. Hologram Miku can no longer talk to Kondo, but he continues to converse with holograms and dine with the virtual character.

Kondo describes himself as someone with “fictosexual” tendencies or someone who is attracted to fictional characters. Kondo has been criticized and judged for marrying a virtual idol, but he says that the experience was completely positive and that his relationship with Miku has helped him come out of his negative emotions. He was able to go to work or eat normally, unlike before. “I used to lock myself in my room all day and watch Miku videos,” says Kondo. However, when he felt that Miku encouraged him to socialize and live healthier, he tried to change himself.

Hatsune Miku debuted in 2007 and is the first of Crypton Future Media’s Vocaloids, a series of virtual singers with computer-generated voices. She has quickly become a popular phenomenon in Japan, especially in the fields of anime and pop music. Miku is now an important figure in inspiring merchandise and has released numerous albums, video games, and idol collections. Although she is a virtual singer, Miku also organizes touring programs through hologram technology, she even participated in Lady Gaga’s tour in 2014.
