According to CNN, with this position, Cavoli will assume the responsibility of commanding 100,000 US troops and 40,000 troops from allied countries being deployed across Europe.

Later, also on May 3, spokeswoman for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Oana Lungescu confirmed that the organization’s North Atlantic Council had approved the nomination of Mr. Cavoli.

Thus, General Cavoli will succeed the position of supreme commander of allied forces in NATO from US Air Force General Tod D. Wolters.

Previously, during a hearing on March 29 before the US Senate Armed Services Committee, General Wolters confirmed that he would resign in the near future after taking command of SACEUR in May 2019.

It is expected that the handover ceremony of the supreme commander of SACEUR will take place in Belgium in the summer of 2022.

General Cavoli, an expert on Eurasia, who served in the war in Afghanistan, is currently the commander of US Army forces in Africa and Europe.

After taking up the new post, General Cavoli will be in charge of the US military’s day-to-day efforts in assessing Russia’s military efforts in Europe, and overseeing weapons deliveries by the US and its allies in Ukraine.

According to a NATO spokesman, General Cavoli will monitor NATO’s air force, which regularly flies across Europe to monitor Russian planes.
