A Ford GT owner in Boca Raton (Florida, USA) drove his newly purchased car straight into a tree because he was not used to using the manual shifter, police said.
50-year-old man named Robert J.Guarini told police that he lost control after entering the gear to move out of the house around 6pm on April 29. The car hit a palm tree.
Although the police report said Guarini told them the crash was caused by a lack of experience with manual transmissions, but speaking to Road & Track, he said the Ford GT had a few other problems. He claimed that old tires, muddy pavement and his unfamiliarity with the new car were the main reasons why the 550-horsepower supercar lost control and crashed into a tree. He said the accident happened when he switched from 2nd to 1st.
“I don’t want people to think I’m racing at 90 mph,” Guarini said. I’m going at 35 mph. Meanwhile, the police report did not mention the speed of the vehicle.
Photographs show that the car only suffered damage to the front third. The impact was strong enough to deploy multiple airbags, disabling the vehicle and causing the GT to skid and crash into another tree blocking a nearby sidewalk.
Police said the car was not registered for insurance while Guarini insisted the car was fully insured, just that he did not have identification with him when the accident happened.
The VIN on the car shows it was purchased at a Barrett-Jackson auction in Palm Beach in early April for $704,000. This signals that repairing the car will not be easy, at least in terms of cost.
However, before even thinking about fixing the car, he received a warning for driving with a suspended license and operating an unregistered vehicle. The 50-year-old insists his driving license suspension was due to a “document error”.
