MoMo identifies crooks pretend brand, announcing the program “Customer gratitude gifts when reaching 30 million members” (even though there is no such event).

The scammer will ask the victim to provide wallet login information to receive a gift package worth nearly 2 million VND on the occasion of the great holiday that coincides with the milestone of 30 million customers. The fake emails often have a diverse structure, in which most use Google’s Gmail service and name the email address containing the keyword “momo” to increase trust.

Email sent to “prey” will contain a link to a Google form (Form). After clicking, the user is required to access and provide information about the MoMo e-wallet being used to receive the gift package.

“This is a complete scam to money appropriation in the customer’s e-wallet,” MoMo’s side affirmed. The unit also recommends that users ignore emails with similar content above, do not click on links or provide any login information.

In addition, the company also recorded other fraudulent behavior when the subject actively exchanged content with the victim via social network like Facebook, Zalo and send a QR code to request payment for the order, then return the money to them. According to a MoMo representative, the QR scan is actually to establish a link between their e-wallet account and the purchase account used by the scammer on popular online services such as Lazada, Tiki, and Sendo. , Google, Apple…

After scanning the QR code, the link is successfully established, the subject can freely shop online on the linked online platforms without re-authenticating the password or OTP during the payment process. At this time, the victim will lose money in the account even though he is not the person who directly made the transaction.

To protect their accounts, users are advised not to provide their password, one-time authentication code (OTP) of the e-wallet to anyone else, including someone claiming to be an employee of the service provider company. The credentials should not be used anywhere but the official wallet app.

The forms of scanning codes, accessing links of unknown origin need to be verified to avoid information theft. In addition, important information related to e-wallets such as linked personal phone numbers, identification numbers (ID card, CCCD), pictures, bank account information… need to be kept carefully. and absolutely do not post on social networks or the mass media in a public manner. Users should also not lend or allow others to use their wallet accounts.
