Nguyen Huy Hoang was born in 2000. He was born in Thanh Tien village, Tien Hoa commune, Tuyen Hoa district, Quang Binh province. Huy Hoang’s family lives by fishing, catching fish on the Gianh River to feed 6 children. As the youngest child in the family with a passion for swimming, Hoang is often followed by his father when he picks up seaweed as food for fish in cages.

Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang has high expectations at SEA Games 31.

Born and raised in the river, swimming with the children here is like a survival skill. Among the children in the same village, Hoang is the best swimmer. People here all call him “otter” because Hoang has a talent for swimming, likes to soak in water and sunbathe, so his body is black.

With a talent for swimming since childhood, Hoang was noticed by gymnastics teachers of Tien Hoa Primary School and selected to join the swimming team to attend the Phu Dong Health Association at district and provincial levels. Only 11 years old, a 5th grade student, Hoang alone wrapped a towel in Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province to receive training. After 2 years of training at the Sports and Training Center of Quang Binh province, showing outstanding swimming qualities, Hoang was trained at the National Sports Training Center in Ho Chi Minh City. During this time, he participated in many swimming tournaments and won many high prizes. A year later, the training board and experts summoned Hoang to practice with the athletes at the National Sports Training Center in Can Tho City.

Gold achievements and medals

After many efforts and training efforts, in 2015, Hoang began to have the first impressive results in his swimming career. In his first international competition at the Southeast Asian Youth Swimming Championships, Huy Hoang became a phenomenon of Vietnamese swimming when he won 5 gold medals in the 400m freestyle, 1,500m freestyle events. m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200m stride and 4x100m relay.

Hoang has won many awards and medals since he was quite young.

In 2016, “Ganh river otter” won another gold medal at 1,500 m, and broke the national record at the National Swimming Championships. In 2017, in the first time attending the 29th SEA Games, Huy Hoang excellently won the gold medal, breaking the SEA Games record with a record of 15 minutes 20 seconds 20.

At ASIAD 18 2018, Huy Hoang won silver in the 1,500m freestyle, he became the first male swimmer in Vietnam to win a medal at ASIAD. In addition, in 2018, Hoang also won the men’s 800m freestyle gold at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Argentina.
