AmericaThe startup Undefined Technologies announced the design of an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) drone called the Silent Ventus, which works on ion thrust instead of propellers.

The new vehicle uses proprietary technology to activate an ion cloud around the drone’s body. This allows the drone to generate large ionic thrust in the air and take off with almost no noise. The ion propulsion system consists of a large electrode network with at least 2 layers. The layers at the top and bottom carry an opposite charge to accelerate the ionizing air. The column of gas moves in a downward direction, creating thrust.

“Silent Ventus is a living example of our intent to create a sustainable, innovative and low-noise urban environment,” said Tomas Pribanic, founder and CEO of Undefined Technologies. “This design brings us closer to the end product and allows us to demonstrate a dual use of the technology.”

In December 2021, the drone model completed an important milestone, which was a test flight lasting 2 minutes and 30 seconds to evaluate performance, flight dynamics, durability and noise level. Engineers in charge of testing report that the vehicle’s flight time is five times longer than the previous version and produces less than 85 decibels of noise.

According to Undefined Technologies, current drone designs use physical principles to achieve noise levels below 70 decibels, making them ideal for use in the US market, where residential, industrial and commercial noise levels are limited. in the range of 50 – 70 dB. Meanwhile, most drones on the market have a noise level of 85 – 90 dB.
