LFP battery – ‘weapon’ of VinFast electric motorbike

LFP battery technology helps VinFast electric motorcycles have a range of up to 200 km, superior longevity and stability compared to Lithium-ion batteries.

The use of LFP (Lithium Ferrous Phosphate – Lithium iron phosphate – LiFePO4) battery line is considered by VinFast to be a revolution in the electric motorcycle market in Vietnam.

According to the company, thanks to the new energy storage structure, the LFP battery has a stable discharge current when the battery is below 50% capacity. This can help cars with LFP batteries not lose speed when the battery is low – a drawback of the Lithium-ion type.

“The loss rate of the new battery is 2% per month if the car is not used, while the lead-acid battery loses about 30%,” said a VinFast representative. “The ability to hold power, low loss when not in use are factors that help increase the life of the LFP. This battery has a range of twice as long as previous Lithium-ion.”

Specifically, this company announced a new line of electric motorcycles using LFP batteries that can be charged and discharged more than 2,000 times and can still store up to 70% of energy. Meanwhile, the life of a lead-acid battery is 300-400 times, a Lithium-ion battery is 1,000 times. In addition, LFP batteries can resist physical impact, deformation and use large capacity charging…

The lithium iron phosphate compound in LFP batteries also has less impact on the environment, is recyclable and cheaper than Lithium-ion.

Before VinFast launched models using LFP batteries, there were two common types of batteries: Lithium-ion with NMC technology (Nikel, Manganese, Cobalt) and NCA (Nickel, Cobalt, Aluminum – aluminum). This is a battery that uses rare materials such as Nickel, Cobalt… with high cost and certain impact on the environment.

Basically, comparing between LFP and NMC/NCA, LFP is safe, has long service life and better resistance to high temperature, while NMC/NCA has high energy density, lighter, efficient charging better, resistant to low temperatures. In the world, LFP is often used on buses that do not require high speed, with cars like Tesla that need to release energy quickly, they still use NMC/NCA.

Last August, VinFast cooperated with Gotion High-Tech to develop an LFP battery supply project, planning to build a LFP battery cell factory in Vietnam. After 9 months, the company introduced 5 new electric motorcycle models using this type of battery.

In particular, Evo 200 is a new model, priced at 22 million VND (excluding battery), has a maximum speed of 70 km / h, a range of 200 km after each full charge. Feliz S and Klara S 2022 also have a travel range of 200 km, a maximum speed of 80 km / h, a trunk volume of 22-25 liters.
