Russian tourists tell stories of losing their phones in the old town

HanoiOn the morning of May 5, Viktoriia and Zhanna had just got off the taxi when the driver sped away, their two phones still charging in the car.

In the afternoon of the same day, at the Hoan Kiem District Police headquarters, two Russian tourists, Lutshenkho Zhanna (born in 1999) and Kushnir Viktoriia (born in 1997), received The phone was stolen by the taxi driver.

Zhanna and Viktoriia were surprised by the fast handling speed of the Hanoi Police. Two female tourists shared that “the phone was determined to be lost” but did not expect to find it quickly.

“We had the misfortune of meeting bad people, but what happened soon after helped us see that this is a country of good people. First impressions are still very positive,” Zhann said. “The police do a great job and we want to thank them very much,” Viktoriia said.

Zhanna and Viktoriia recounted that at dawn on May 5, they were walking in the old town and needed a place to change money. A man introduced himself as a taxi driver and invited them to get in the car to look for them. The two girls agreed and asked him to help charge the phone. After going for a while, the driver stopped and pointed out where to change money, making sure you can rest assured to leave your phone.

When Zhanna and Viktoriia got off the bus, the driver sped away, carrying an iPhone 12 Pro and a Huawei phone. All personal information, electronic documents of two people are in the phone. Viktoriia burst into tears, Zhanna calmed down and decided to go find someone who knows English for help. They were then supported by people around Cam Chi Street to deliver Hang Bong to the hotel on Kim Ma Street, and asked the hotel staff to report it to the police.

Two female tourists entered Vietnam on May 4 and planned to go to Ha Long on May 6, then return to Hanoi to continue exploring other destinations. They shared: “We feel safe enough to continue touring Vietnam, although we will be more cautious when calling a taxi”. The biggest obstacle for the two of them was that they couldn’t speak English. Viktoriia and Zhanna do not know much about Vietnamese cuisine, but expressed their desire to try beef pho and chicken rice.

Immediately after the incident, the police of Hang Bong ward found the taxi driver. At the police station, the driver said that after picking up two foreign girls, they asked to charge their phones. As soon as they got in the car, they got off and said something but he didn’t understand. Thinking that the two were not going anymore, he drove away. When he returned, he discovered two phones, so he returned to the company this morning. The police of Hang Bong ward will continue to clarify the incident to conclude whether the driver will be prosecuted for criminal responsibility.
